The Department of Physics at North Gauhati College was established in 1979 under the leadership of Sri Manindra Kumar Barooah as its founding Head. The undergraduate program (B.Sc) commenced in 1987, followed by the introduction of the Physics Major Course in 1994.
Today, the Department stands strong with well-equipped laboratories and a dedicated computer laboratory catering to Honours students. It actively engages in community outreach through initiatives like Online Seminars and Sky Watching Programs. Regular field trips and laboratory visits are organized to enrich student learning experiences, while participation in co-curricular activities is strongly encouraged. The department showcases student and faculty contributions on contemporary scientific topics through its wall magazine "New Horizon".
With a dynamic team of young and enthusiastic faculty members, who are actively involved in research, academics, and administration, the Department continues to uphold its commitment to academic excellence and scientific advancement.
